                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to attendance in public schools of persons over 18 years
 1-3     of age.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 25.085, Education Code, is amended by
 1-6     adding Subsection (e) to read as follows:
 1-7           (e)  A person who voluntarily enrolls in school or
 1-8     voluntarily attends school after the person's 18th birthday shall
 1-9     attend school each school day for the entire period the program of
1-10     instruction is offered.  A school district shall revoke for the
1-11     remainder of the school year the enrollment of a person who
1-12     violates this subsection.  A person whose enrollment is revoked
1-13     under this subsection may be considered an unauthorized person on
1-14     school district grounds for purposes of Section 37.107.
1-15           SECTION 2.  Section 25.087(a), Education Code, is amended to
1-16     read as follows:
1-17           (a)  A person [child] required to attend school, including a
1-18     person required to attend school under Section 25.085(e), may be
1-19     excused for temporary absence resulting from any cause acceptable
1-20     to the teacher, principal, or superintendent of the school in which
1-21     the person [child] is enrolled.
1-22           SECTION 3.  This Act applies beginning with the 1999-2000
1-23     school year.
