1-8 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1-9 AN ACT
1-10 relating to burials in the State Cemetery.
1-11 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-12 SECTION 1. Subsection (e), Section 2165.256, Government
1-13 Code, is amended to read as follows:
1-14 (e) The committee shall review proclamations under
1-15 Subsection (d)(4) and resolutions under Subsection (d)(5). A
1-16 person specified in a proclamation or resolution is eligible for
1-17 burial in the State Cemetery only if the committee, following its
1-18 review, finds that the person specified made a significant
1-19 contribution to Texas history and only if, based on that finding,
1-20 the committee approves the person's burial in the cemetery. The
1-21 committee may by order authorize a burial under Subsection (d)(6)
1-22 [only during a period in which the legislature is not convened in
1-23 regular or special session and] only if the committee finds that
1-24 the person made a significant contribution to Texas history.
1-25 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 1999.
1-26 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the
1-27 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-28 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
1-29 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
1-30 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
