No. 1621 1-2 (In the Senate - Filed March 12, 1999; March 15, 1999, read 1-3 first time and referred to Committee on Veteran Affairs and 1-4 Military Installations; April 22, 1999, reported favorably by the 1-5 following vote: Yeas 4, Nays 0; April 22, 1999, sent to printer.) 1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-7 AN ACT 1-8 relating to registration fees for surviving spouses of certain 1-9 military veterans. 1-10 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-11 SECTION 1. Subsection (c), Section 502.266, Transportation 1-12 Code, is amended to read as follows: 1-13 (c) The surviving spouse of a person who was killed in 1-14 action while serving in the United States armed forces is entitled 1-15 to register one or more motor vehicles under Section 502.258 as 1-16 long as the spouse remains unmarried. A person entitled to 1-17 register under this subsection may register one passenger car or 1-18 light truck without payment of a registration fee or a fee under 1-19 Section 502.258. An application for registration under this 1-20 subsection must be on a form provided by the department and be 1-21 accompanied by a fee of $3. 1-22 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 1999, and 1-23 applies only to a registration period beginning on or after the 1-24 effective date of this Act. 1-25 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the 1-26 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an 1-27 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the 1-28 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several 1-29 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended. 1-30 * * * * *
