AN ACT
 1-1     relating to the limit on amounts that may be awarded for pecuniary
 1-2     loss to certain applicants under the Crime Victims' Compensation
 1-3     Act.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Notwithstanding Section 2, Chapter 1434, Acts of
 1-6     the 75th Legislature, Regular Session, 1997, Subsection (a),
 1-7     Article 56.42, Code of Criminal Procedure, as amended by that Act,
 1-8     applies to an application for compensation for criminally injurious
 1-9     conduct occurring before the effective date of that Act if the
1-10     application was filed:
1-11                 (1)  by or on behalf of a dependent of a victim who
1-12     died as a result of the criminally injurious conduct; and
1-13                 (2)  in a timely manner and was approved by the
1-14     attorney general before the effective date of this Act.
1-15           SECTION 2.  The importance of this legislation and the
1-16     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-17     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
1-18     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
1-19     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
1-20     and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its
1-21     passage, and it is so enacted.
