No. 1734 1-2 (In the Senate - Filed March 12, 1999; March 15, 1999, read 1-3 first time and referred to Committee on Criminal Justice; 1-4 April 8, 1999, reported favorably by the following vote: Yeas 7, 1-5 Nays 0; April 8, 1999, sent to printer.) 1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-7 AN ACT 1-8 relating to the limit on amounts that may be awarded for pecuniary 1-9 loss to certain applicants under the Crime Victims' Compensation 1-10 Act. 1-11 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-12 SECTION 1. Notwithstanding Section 2, Chapter 1434, Acts of 1-13 the 75th Legislature, Regular Session, 1997, Subsection (a), 1-14 Article 56.42, Code of Criminal Procedure, as amended by that Act, 1-15 applies to an application for compensation for criminally injurious 1-16 conduct occurring before the effective date of that Act if the 1-17 application was filed: 1-18 (1) by or on behalf of a dependent of a victim who 1-19 died as a result of the criminally injurious conduct; and 1-20 (2) in a timely manner and was approved by the 1-21 attorney general before the effective date of this Act. 1-22 SECTION 2. The importance of this legislation and the 1-23 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an 1-24 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the 1-25 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several 1-26 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended, 1-27 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its 1-28 passage, and it is so enacted. 1-29 * * * * *
