SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The physical landscape of Terrell County has long 1-2 been associated with an abundant and unique member of our state's 1-3 natural flora, the cactus; and 1-4 WHEREAS, More than 100 species of cacti are found in the Lone 1-5 Star State, the largest number of any state in the United States, 1-6 and in all of its forms, the cactus is renowned for its remarkable 1-7 ability to thrive in conditions that include periodic drought, 1-8 dust, extreme heat, and flooding; and 1-9 WHEREAS, A vast array of diverse cacti can be found in 1-10 Terrell County, including those from the genera Echinocereus, 1-11 Echinocactus, Mammillaria, and Opuntia, and the county's remarkable 1-12 collection and variety has earned the area widespread acclaim among 1-13 cactus aficionados and experts from throughout the nation; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Each year, the community of Sanderson, as the county 1-15 seat of Terrell County, is home to the Prickly Pear Pachanga, a 1-16 celebration that entertains and informs visitors with cactus-themed 1-17 food, folklore, costumes, and arts and crafts; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The citizens of Sanderson and Terrell County take 1-19 significant pride in the myriad cacti that populate their region, 1-20 and it is most fitting that their community be formally recognized 1-21 for the sturdy, resilient plant that has become representative of 1-22 their city and county; now, therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-24 hereby declare Sanderson in Terrell County as the Cactus Capital of 2-1 Texas; and, be it further 2-2 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-3 prepared for prominent display in the City of Sanderson. _______________________________ _______________________________ President of the Senate Speaker of the House I hereby certify that S.C.R.
