SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, Poetry and works of art can immortalize for all time
1-2 the spirit of the age and the cultural heritage by which they were
1-3 inspired; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Recognizing outstanding poets in this state by
1-5 bestowing on them titles of honor is a worthy tribute and serves as
1-6 an encouragement to other talented Texas poets; and
1-7 WHEREAS, Traditionally, the Legislature of the State of Texas
1-8 has designated a Poet Laureate who has exhibited exceptional
1-9 ability in capturing the beauty of this state, some facet of its
1-10 history, or the proud spirit of its people; now, therefore, be it
1-11 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
1-12 hereby create a special committee to designate two Poets Laureate
1-13 for the State of Texas to serve a term of one year; and, be it
1-14 further
1-15 RESOLVED, That the committee shall designate a Poet Laureate
1-16 for the year beginning November 1, 1999, and ending October 31,
1-17 2000, and a Poet Laureate for the year beginning November 1, 2000,
1-18 and ending October 31, 2001; and, be it further
1-19 RESOLVED, That the committee shall be composed of three
1-20 members of the senate to be appointed by the lieutenant governor
1-21 and three members of the house of representatives to be appointed
1-22 by the speaker of the house; the lieutenant governor and speaker of
1-23 the house shall each designate a cochair from among their
2-1 appointees, and the committee shall subsequently meet at the call
2-2 of the cochairs; and, be it further
2-3 RESOLVED, That in the selection process each committee member
2-4 may nominate no more than two poets for each year, and from the
2-5 list of nominees, the committee members shall elect a Poet
2-6 Laureate; in the election, a member may not vote for his nominees;
2-7 and, be it further
2-8 RESOLVED, That the persons designated as poet laureates be
2-9 superior and recognized poets who are citizens of the State of
2-10 Texas.
