 1-6                        SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-7           WHEREAS, Poetry and works of art can immortalize for all time
 1-8     the spirit of the age and the cultural heritage by which they were
 1-9     inspired; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Recognizing outstanding poets in this state by
1-11     bestowing on them titles of honor is a worthy tribute and serves as
1-12     an encouragement to other talented Texas poets; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Traditionally, the Legislature of the State of Texas
1-14     has designated a poet laureate who has exhibited exceptional
1-15     ability in capturing the beauty of this state, some facet of its
1-16     history, or the proud spirit of its people; now, therefore, be it
1-17           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
1-18     hereby create a special committee to designate two poets laureate
1-19     for the State of Texas to serve a term of one year; and, be it
1-20     further
1-21           RESOLVED, That the committee shall designate a poet laureate
1-22     for the year beginning November 1, 1999, and ending October 31,
1-23     2000, and a poet laureate for the year beginning November 1, 2000,
1-24     and ending October 31, 2001; and, be it further
1-25           RESOLVED, That the committee shall be composed of three
1-26     members of the senate to be appointed by the lieutenant governor
1-27     and three members of the house of representatives to be appointed
1-28     by the speaker of the house; the lieutenant governor and speaker of
1-29     the house shall each designate a cochair from among their
1-30     appointees, and the committee shall subsequently meet at the call
1-31     of the cochairs; and, be it further
1-32           RESOLVED, That in the selection process each committee member
1-33     may nominate no more than two poets for each year, and from the
1-34     list of nominees, the committee members shall elect a poet
1-35     laureate; in the election, a member may not vote for his nominees;
1-36     and, be it further
1-37           RESOLVED, That the persons designated as poets laureate be
1-38     superior and recognized poets who are citizens of the State of
1-39     Texas.
