No. 42 1-2 (In the Senate - Filed March 3, 1999; March 4, 1999, read 1-3 first time and referred to Committee on Administration; 1-4 March 24, 1999, reported favorably by the following vote: Yeas 5, 1-5 Nays 0; March 24, 1999, sent to printer.) 1-6 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-7 WHEREAS, San Antonio's Centro Alameda arts complex will 1-8 include a museum showcasing the distinctive Latino cultural 1-9 experience; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The Centro Alameda/Centro de Artes Latino Museum is 1-11 being developed as a collaborative effort of many dedicated 1-12 individuals and organizations and involves a major affiliation with 1-13 the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, which will exchange 1-14 items for exhibit with the Texas facility; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The City of San Antonio recently donated $1.5 1-16 million in funding as part of its pledge over the next three years 1-17 and city officials enthusiastically support the project as an 1-18 enhancement to the Alamo City's quality of life; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Renovation and expansion continue at the Alameda 1-20 Theater, a San Antonio landmark since 1949, as well as the office 1-21 building complex on West Houston Street; the plan includes a new 1-22 stagehouse tailored to accommodate major musical and theatrical 1-23 productions, as well as symphony concerts, opera, ballet, and 1-24 folkloric extravaganzas; and 1-25 WHEREAS, A museum studies program and a theater arts program 1-26 are being created in collaboration with The University of Texas at 1-27 San Antonio, and Centro Alameda and the Smithsonian Institute have 1-28 already brought several projects to San Antonio, including the May 1-29 1998 international conference, "Image of Devotion, Icon of 1-30 Identity: The Virgin Mary in the Americas"; an exhibition on the 1-31 same topic is slated to open in late 1999 in the city, and the 1-32 Tejano Music Festival involved The Smithsonian Associates and 1-33 Smithsonian Folkways; and 1-34 WHEREAS, The diligent efforts of San Antonio citizens in 1-35 creating the Centro Alameda arts complex will allow countless 1-36 Americans and citizens around the globe to appreciate Texas' Latino 1-37 heritage, and it is fitting that this worthy endeavor be honored at 1-38 this time; now, therefore, be it 1-39 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-40 express support for this unique contribution to the state's 1-41 culturally rich history by designating the Centro Alameda/Centro de 1-42 Artes Latino Museum as the official Texas State Latino Museum; and, 1-43 be it further 1-44 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 1-45 prepared for Centro Alameda Chairman Henry R. Munoz III for 1-46 prominent display at the museum with the warmest best wishes for 1-47 many years of success from the Texas Legislature. 1-48 * * * * *
