SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is pleased to recognize the
 1-2     150th anniversary of the San Antonio-El Paso Overland Road; and
 1-3           WHEREAS, Established in 1849, the San Antonio-El Paso
 1-4     Overland Road was the 19th century version of today's interstate
 1-5     highway system; it was responsible for the opening and settlement
 1-6     of West Texas and destinations further west; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Many thousands of '49ers used this route across
 1-8     Texas to gain access to the gold fields of California; this created
 1-9     the need to establish countless stagecoach stations and numerous
1-10     United States Army cavalry posts such as Fort Inge, Fort Clark,
1-11     Fort Hudson, Fort Lancaster, Fort Stockton, Fort Davis, Fort
1-12     Quitman, and Fort Bliss; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The impressive variety of human dramas which took
1-14     place in Texas along the Overland Road present vivid pictures in
1-15     our imaginations of the struggle between the diverse cultural and
1-16     ethnic mix of Native Americans, Hispanics, Anglos, and African
1-17     Americans during the opening of the American West; and
1-18           WHEREAS, The Texas towns, cities, state parks, national
1-19     historic sites, and breathtaking landscapes located along this most
1-20     important thoroughfare in Texas history offer today's visitors to
1-21     Texas, and Texans alike, a fascinating glimpse into this romantic
1-22     chapter of Southwestern history and lead travelers through a region
1-23     which reflects the indomitable Texas spirit; now, therefore, be it
1-24           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-1     hereby designate the San Antonio-El Paso Overland Road a Texas
 2-2     Travel Trail and commemorate the Sesquicentennial Celebration of
 2-3     the San Antonio-El Paso Overland Road; and, be it further
 2-4           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared as an
 2-5     expression of the high regard of the Texas Legislature.
