SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes great
 1-2     pleasure in recognizing Dr. George Anderson Hurst, Director
 1-3     Emeritus of The University of Texas  Health Center at Tyler from
 1-4     1970 until 1998; indeed, this esteemed gentleman has been an
 1-5     invaluable resource for The University of Texas System and his
 1-6     community; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The son of American missionaries, Dr. Hurst was born
 1-8     in Brazil and attended high school in Georgia; a graduate of Austin
 1-9     College at Sherman, Texas, he went on to earn his medical degree
1-10     from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas;
1-11     Dr. Hurst interned at Parkland Memorial Hospital; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Dr. Hurst moved to Tyler, Texas, to become Clinical
1-13     Director of the East Texas Chest Hospital in 1964; named director
1-14     in 1970, he served the institution in that capacity until January,
1-15     1998; the hospital became a part of The University of Texas System
1-16     in 1977 and was renamed The University of Texas Health Center at
1-17     Tyler; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Dr. Hurst worked diligently to accomplish great
1-19     things for The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler; he
1-20     presided over the institution's prolific growth during the 1980s
1-21     and 1990s; this era witnessed the health center's acquisition of
1-22     several new facilities:  the Patient Tower in 1980; the Biomedical
1-23     Research Building and the Medical Resident Center in 1987; and the
1-24     Ambulatory Clinic Building in 1996; also during Dr. Hurst's tenure,
 2-1     the Family Practice and Occupational Medicine programs were begun;
 2-2     as director, Dr. Hurst's most remarkable achievement was overseeing
 2-3     the health center's evolution from a chest hospital to an acute
 2-4     care facility with the resources to care for patients, to educate
 2-5     medical students, and to perform biomedical research; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Dr. Hurst has served his institution, community,
 2-7     family, and church with humility; he is a godly man, who places
 2-8     others before himself; his dedication to caring for those in need
 2-9     has earned him the respect of his peers and the love of his
2-10     community; the many honors bestowed upon him bespeak his compassion
2-11     for humanity and his professional integrity; and
2-12           WHEREAS, The University of Texas Health Center is honored to
2-13     recognize Dr. George Anderson Hurst, Director Emeritus, for his
2-14     exemplary service as its director; now, therefore, be it
2-15           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-16     hereby commend Dr. George Anderson Hurst for his lifetime of
2-17     devotion to serving mankind; and, be it further
2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr.
2-19     Hurst as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature.
