SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas joins the 1-2 citizens of Lubbock and of the entire State of Texas in expressing 1-3 shock and sorrow at the tragic accident in New Mexico on May 2, 1-4 1999, of a Green Lawn Church of Christ bus in which six local 1-5 teenagers died; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The bus was filled with young people from the church 1-7 returning from a youth retreat at Pine Springs Youth Camp near 1-8 Cloudcroft, New Mexico; the six young women who died were Sara 1-9 English, Meg Flynn, Sarah Johnson, Talitha Beeman, Astyn Qubty, and 1-10 Heather Bauman; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Born March 24, 1984, in Lubbock, Sara Anne English 1-12 was a ninth grade student at MacKenzie Junior High School, where 1-13 she was a member of the Junior National Honor Society; she had 1-14 recently received the Monterey Optimists award for high character 1-15 and had been nominated for this year's MacKenzie Hall of Fame award 1-16 and the Daughters of the American Republic award; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Born on December 8, 1982, in Lubbock, Margaret Nell 1-18 Flynn, called Meg by her friends, was a freshman at Tahoka High 1-19 School, where she worked on the school newspaper, played the flute 1-20 with the Tahoka 3-D Band from Bull Dog Land, and was a student 1-21 reporter for the Lynn County News; she was deeply involved in 1-22 Church of Christ Adventures in Missions youth activities; and 1-23 WHEREAS, An eighth grade student at Smylie Wilson Junior High 1-24 School, Sarah N. Johnson was born on September 4, 1984, in Midland; 2-1 this talented young woman was an avid athlete and a member of the 2-2 school orchestra and the National Junior Honor Society, and she had 2-3 been named May Teen of the Month at her school; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A junior at Meadow High School, Talitha Denita 2-5 Beeman was born on March 9, 1983, in Lubbock; she was on the school 2-6 yearbook staff, participated in the Mexican Summer Mission of Green 2-7 Lawn Church of Christ, and was a Spanish/English interpreter; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Born on April 4, 1985, in Lubbock, Astyn Lee Qubty 2-9 attended Lubbock Christian Junior High School, where she enjoyed 2-10 playing volleyball and basketball; she especially liked spending 2-11 time with her friends and family and playing with her kitten; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Heather Nicole Bauman was born on April 16, 1986; 2-13 she was an honor roll student at Smylie Wilson Junior High, where 2-14 she was a member of the Science Club, the band, and the tennis 2-15 team; this outstanding young woman wanted to become a doctor; she 2-16 knew sign language and worked with deaf children at Stubbs 2-17 Elementary School; and 2-18 WHEREAS, The deaths of these young women are a devastating 2-19 loss to their families, their friends, their communities, and to 2-20 the future of the State of Texas, where they would have surely 2-21 become bright leaders of tomorrow; now, therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-23 hereby express deepest condolences to the members of their bereaved 2-24 families; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the 2-26 families as an expression of the profound sympathy of the Texas 3-1 Legislature, and that when the legislature adjourns this day, it do 3-2 so in memory of Sara Anne English, Margaret Nell Flynn, Sarah N. 3-3 Johnson, Talitha Denita Beeman, Astyn Lee Qubty, and Heather Nicole 3-4 Bauman. _______________________________ _______________________________ President of the Senate Speaker of the House I hereby certify that S.C.R.
