1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 24
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas proudly recognizes
 1-3     the citizens of Wichita Falls on the joyous occasion of
 1-4     Wichita Falls Day in Austin, April 14, 1999; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, This event provides the citizens of Wichita Falls
 1-6     with an opportunity to celebrate the amenities of their outstanding
 1-7     city and to take pride in its unique contributions to the
 1-8     State of Texas; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Wichita Falls is located in Northwest Texas, a
1-10     region known for its cattle ranches, oil wells, and gently rolling
1-11     terrain; the city was named for the Wichita Indians who lived near
1-12     waterfalls on what is now the Wichita River; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The county seat of Wichita County, Wichita Falls
1-14     became one of our state's agricultural and trade centers in 1882
1-15     when the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad brought the first train
1-16     to the area; the city also became the headquarters for petroleum
1-17     production, service, and manufacturing in North Texas during the
1-18     oil boom of the early 1900s; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Wichita Falls is home to Sheppard Air Force Base,
1-20     one of the largest of five technical training centers in the
1-21     United States and host to the only NATO pilot training program in
1-22     the world; it is also home to Midwestern State University and 38
1-23     parks that offer a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities;
1-24     and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The Wichita Falls Waterfall is a re-creation of the
 2-2     original falls that were washed away in a flood in 1886; several
 2-3     area lakes, including Lake Arrowhead, and a number of museums and
 2-4     art centers make Wichita Falls an ideal spot for tourists; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, The residents of Wichita Falls are hardworking,
 2-6     generous, and hospitable, and they have united successfully to
 2-7     preserve the beauty and charm of their city; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     76th Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Wichita Falls
2-10     and extend best wishes to them for a rewarding and festive
2-11     Wichita Falls Day; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them
2-13     as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
