1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 32 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure 1-4 in joining the residents of Orange County in designating Monday, 1-5 January 25, 1999, as Orange County Day at the Capitol; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Orange County's roots can be traced to 1852 when 1-7 it was created from Jefferson County and named for an early orange 1-8 grove owned by settler George A. Patillo; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Prior to its colonization, the region was 1-10 inhabited by the Attacapa Indians and visited by the Choctaw, 1-11 Alabama-Coushatta, Biloxi, and Cherokee; the first community 1-12 in the area was the Cow Bayou settlement, and the first railroad 1-13 to serve Orange County was the Texas and New Orleans, which 1-14 reached the area in 1861; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Nestled against the Louisiana border in the 1-16 southeast corner of Texas, Orange County is bounded by the 1-17 Sabine and Neches rivers and by Sabine Lake; known for its 1-18 coastal soils, the county is two-thirds timbered, and forestry 1-19 products are top revenue sources; other revenue sources include 1-20 honey, rice, and horticultural plants; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The county is rich in oil production, and 1-22 petrochemicals, shipbuilding, and lumber processing are 1-23 lucrative businesses; the county seat of Orange is a seaport 1-24 and home to museums, theaters, and a branch of Lamar University; 2-1 and 2-2 WHEREAS, Over the years, industrial development and 2-3 population growth in the county have been managed with care 2-4 in order to preserve natural habitats and historical sites; 2-5 the opportunities for fishing, hunting, and water sports make 2-6 Orange County a desirable recreational area, and tourists are 2-7 attracted by such events as Crawfish Promotion Day and the Gumbo 2-8 Festival held yearly in the City of Orange; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Orange County Day in Austin provides an 2-10 opportunity for old friends and families to gather in celebration 2-11 of Orange County's past and its many assets which are enjoyed today 2-12 by residents and vacationers of all ages; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 76th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the people 2-15 of Orange County for a joyous and celebratory Orange County 2-16 Day; and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared 2-18 for the residents of Orange County as a token of esteem from 2-19 the Texas Senate. 2-20 Bernsen 2-21 Armbrister Harris Ogden 2-22 Barrientos Haywood Ratliff 2-23 Bivins Jackson Shapiro 2-24 Brown Lindsay Shapleigh 2-25 Cain Lucio Sibley 2-26 Carona Luna Truan 2-27 Duncan Madla Wentworth 2-28 Ellis Moncrief West 2-29 Fraser Nelson Whitmire 2-30 Gallegos Nixon Zaffirini 2-31 Perry, President of the Senate 2-32 ______________________________________ 2-33 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the above 3-2 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-3 on January 25, 1999. 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Secretary of the Senate 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 Member, Texas Senate
