1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 46 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in 1-3 recognizing Betsy Singleton, Director of the Opportunity School, 1-4 who was recently selected by the Amarillo Globe-News as its 1998 1-5 Woman of the Year; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Betsy Singleton earned her master's degree in 1-7 history at Baylor University; she married Don Singleton in 1-8 1957, and they had three children; Don and Betsy are the proud 1-9 grandparents of two grandchildren, Ted Richard and Aspen Richard; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, Betsy and Don are members of First Presbyterian 1-12 Church, and one of that church's Sunday School classes founded 1-13 an experimental North Heights school designed to furnish a 1-14 stimulating learning environment for disadvantaged preschool 1-15 children; and 1-16 WHEREAS, While a mother of three in 1969, Mrs. Singleton 1-17 began teaching at Opportunity School, and her original class was 1-18 composed of 15 four-year olds; since that time, she has devoted 1-19 her time and care to improving the school; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Mrs. Singleton has increased the school program 1-21 to include more than 90 children from low-income families; she 1-22 has put great energy into keeping the school modern; and 1-23 WHEREAS, After Betsy Singleton took a Progressive 1-24 Montessori class, she embodied in her program Parents as 2-1 Teachers, after-school care, weekly home visits by teachers, 2-2 and the Books to Babies project; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Betsy Singleton increased her activities to 2-4 include fund-raising when, in the mid-1970s, she learned that 2-5 some federal funding would be cut; she maintained a positive 2-6 attitude, reassured her staff, and was able to raise the 2-7 necessary funds; Betsy determined that a lack of funds would 2-8 never threaten the school again; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-10 76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Betsy Singleton for being 2-11 selected the 1998 Amarillo Globe-News Woman of the Year; 2-12 and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared 2-14 for her as an expression of the admiration and esteem of the 2-15 Texas Senate. 2-16 Bivins 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 President of the Senate 2-19 I hereby certify that the above 2-20 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-21 on January 20, 1999. 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Secretary of the Senate 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 Member, Texas Senate
