1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 48
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-3     recognizing the members of the Texas High School Rodeo Association
 1-4     on their superior performance in winning the 1998 National High
 1-5     School Finals Rodeo, which is sponsored by the National High
 1-6     School Rodeo Association; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Fifty-one cowboys and cowgirls from Texas gathered
 1-8     in Gillette, Wyoming, in July of this past year to compete in
 1-9     the National High School Finals Rodeo against 1,535 individuals
1-10     from 37 states and four Canadian provinces; and after a week of
1-11     competition, the Texas team had won two events championships,
1-12     rookie cowgirl, and the 1998 National High School Finals Rodeo
1-13     team championship; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The National High School Rodeo Association is an
1-15     international, nonprofit organization created by Texas educator
1-16     and rodeo contestant Claude Mullins; and
1-17           WHEREAS, The National High School Rodeo Association is
1-18     dedicated to the development of sportsmanship, horsemanship,
1-19     and character in the youth of our country; membership in the
1-20     association provides an opportunity for high school students
1-21     to receive college scholarships of over $425,000 each year; and
1-22           WHEREAS, The Texas association requires that its
1-23     student contestants maintain grades and conduct that meet
1-24     the qualifications of the National High School Rodeo Association;
 2-1     and
 2-2           WHEREAS, The Texas High School Rodeo Association consists of
 2-3     over 1,450 members and sponsors in excess of 150 rodeos each year
 2-4     throughout its 10 regions; the top rodeo participants from each
 2-5     region compete for numerous awards and scholarships and for the
 2-6     honor of representing the State of Texas at the national finals
 2-7     held each year in July; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, The Texas association is self-supporting and relies
 2-9     on revenue from membership fees, program advertising, promotional
2-10     sales, and the generous support of corporate sponsors and is
2-11     governed by elected student officers and an adult board of
2-12     directors composed of representatives from each of the 10
2-13     regions; now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-15     76th Legislature, hereby commend the Texas High School Rodeo
2-16     Association on its many valuable contributions to rodeo, the
2-17     official state sport of Texas, and extend congratulations to
2-18     the Texas team for earning the 1998 National High School Finals
2-19     Rodeo team championship; and, be it further
2-20           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-21     the Texas High School Rodeo Association as an expression of esteem
2-22     from the Texas Senate.
