 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 50
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure
 1-4     in joining the residents of Grayson County in recognizing Tuesday,
 1-5     February 16, 1999, as Grayson County Day; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Grayson County was carved from Fannin County in
 1-7     1846 and was named in honor of Republic of Texas Attorney General
 1-8     Peter W. Grayson; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The county consists of 984 square miles; it is
1-10     bounded on the north by the Red River and lies partly in the
1-11     Blackland Prairies and partly in the Post Oak Belt; before
1-12     Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1835, several tribes of the
1-13     Caddo confederacy lived in the area; the first settlement was
1-14     established in 1836 near what is now Pilot Grove; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Sherman was selected as the county seat and later
1-16     became known as the "Athens of Texas" because it was the location
1-17     of several colleges, including Austin College; today, Sherman is a
1-18     manufacturing center where many processors and distributors for
1-19     major companies are located; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Throughout the county, industries associated
1-21     with agriculture have developed, and major crops include wheat,
1-22     grain, sorghums, and peanuts; much of the county's revenue stems
1-23     from livestock, such as cattle, horses, and poultry; and
1-24           WHEREAS, Grayson County is home to the Hagerman Wildlife
 2-1     Refuge and the Grayson County Pioneer Village; in the northern
 2-2     part of the county lies Texoma Lake, the fifth largest artificial
 2-3     lake in the United States; the lake provides irrigation and is a
 2-4     leading fishing and tourist attraction; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Grayson County offers the opportunities generated
 2-6     by growing communities, yet its natural beauty and rural charm have
 2-7     been retained, and the residents of Grayson County deserve to be
 2-8     proud of their efforts and planning; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-10     76th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the people of
2-11     Grayson County for a joyous and celebratory Grayson County Day;
2-12     and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-14     the residents of Grayson County as an expression of esteem from
2-15     the Texas Senate.
