 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 68
 1-3           WHEREAS, On February 3, 1999, the residents of two cities,
 1-4     Lufkin and Nacogdoches, will celebrate Lufkin/Nacogdoches Day
 1-5     at the State Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The county seat of Nacogdoches County, Nacogdoches
 1-7     is the oldest city in Texas; it contains many small businesses
 1-8     and has several major industries; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Named for the Nacogdoche Indians who lived there
1-10     hundreds of years ago, this charming city has many attractions
1-11     for tourists, including historical monuments such as the Old North
1-12     Church and the Old Stone Church; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The home of Stephen F. Austin State University,
1-14     Nacogdoches enjoys many of the advantages of being a small college
1-15     town; it has the vitality of youth about it because of the students;
1-16     and
1-17           WHEREAS, The delightful town of Lufkin is the county seat of
1-18     Angelina County, which was named for the legendary Indian maiden
1-19     Angelina; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Home of the annual Texas Forest Festival, Lufkin
1-21     also houses the Texas Forestry Museum, the only forestry museum in
1-22     Texas and one of the largest of its kind in the United States; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Lufkin is the commercial center for a 12-county
1-24     rural market region which serves over 300,000 residents; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Much of the development which took place in Lufkin
 2-2     focused around the arrival of the railroad and the growth it
 2-3     engendered between 1882 and 1890; the second wave of growth
 2-4     occurred when the great timber boom produced hundreds of sawmills
 2-5     in East Texas between 1890 and 1920; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Sam Rayburn Lake, located in the heart of Angelina
 2-7     National Forest, is nearby and presents many opportunities for
 2-8     recreation; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, The residents of the cities of Lufkin and
2-10     Nacogdoches are proud of the colorful history of their towns
2-11     and will celebrate their rich heritage on February 3, 1999;
2-12     now, therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-14     76th Legislature, hereby congratulate the citizens of Nacogdoches
2-15     and Lufkin on the grand occasion of Lufkin/Nacogdoches Day; and,
2-16     be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-18     Lufkin/Nacogdoches Day in recognition of this momentous event
2-19     and as an expression of appreciation from the Texas Senate.
