 1-5                          Gloria Rai Johnson White
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of esteemed educator
 1-8     Gloria Rai Johnson White, who died January 21, 1999; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, An adopted Texan, this distinguished woman
1-10     was born on September 5, 1931, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, to the
1-11     Reverend D. Edwin and Ila Mai Johnson; and
1-12           WHEREAS, After graduating from Prairie View A&M College
1-13     with a bachelor's degree in social studies and a master's degree
1-14     in education, Mrs. White taught in the school systems of Texas
1-15     for 35 years, ending her career with the Dallas Independent
1-16     School District; and
1-17           WHEREAS, A beloved educator who gained the trust and
1-18     respect of her young students, she instilled in them a lifelong
1-19     love of learning; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Considered a "point of light" by her students,
1-21     Mrs. White encouraged them to strive for excellence in all their
1-22     endeavors; she believed in them and encouraged them to believe in
1-23     themselves; and
1-24           WHEREAS, Active in community affairs, Mrs. White was on
 2-1     the boards of the Dallas African American Museum and the Dallas
 2-2     Black Dance Theater; she participated as a mentor and selection
 2-3     committee volunteer for the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership
 2-4     Program, an internship program for college students; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Her encouragement of young people knew no
 2-6     bounds and she was a founder of the Jack and Jill Beautillion,
 2-7     which promotes African American young men who are high school
 2-8     seniors; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Living her Christian beliefs in thought, word,
2-10     and action every day of her life, she was a member of various
2-11     church ministries and organizations at Good Street Baptist Church
2-12     of Dallas; and
2-13           WHEREAS, The warmth, wisdom, and valued counsel of this
2-14     remarkable woman will be forever cherished in the hearts and
2-15     minds of all who knew and loved her; now, therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-17     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-18     members of her family:  her husband, Dawrence L. White, Sr.;
2-19     her son, Dawrence L. White II; her granddaughters, Lauren and
2-20     Isa White; and her two brothers and one sister; and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-22     the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
2-23     from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
2-24     it do so in memory of Gloria Rai Johnson White.
