 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 92
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-4     recognizing Ricky Williams, the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner, on
 1-5     his outstanding athletic achievements and his record-breaking
 1-6     performance as a running back for The University of Texas at
 1-7     Austin; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, At Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on
 1-9     Friday, November 27, 1998, in a game between the university and
1-10     its longtime rival, Texas A&M University, Ricky Williams became
1-11     the leading rusher in the history of major college football; and
1-12           WHEREAS, In front of a crowd of 83,687, Ricky Williams
1-13     took a first quarter handoff from quarterback Major Applewhite
1-14     and slipped through several tacklers for a 60-yard touchdown
1-15     run, thus breaking the 22-year-old National Collegiate Athletic
1-16     Association Division I-A record of 6,082 rushing yards set by
1-17     Tony Dorsett at the University of Pittsburgh; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Amassing a remarkable 259 yards rushing in the
1-19     game, the most ever against a Texas A&M University defense,
1-20     Ricky Williams finished his college football career with 6,279
1-21     yards, 41 school records, and 16 National Collegiate Athletic
1-22     Association records; his career average of 6.21 yards per carry
1-23     broke the National Collegiate Athletic Association record of
1-24     6.13 yards per carry set by Ohio State University's Heisman
 2-1     Trophy winner Archie Griffin; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, A star football player whose power, speed, and
 2-3     tenacity have earned him a prestigious place in college football
 2-4     history, Ricky Williams has played a major role in helping to
 2-5     turn the tide for this year's University of Texas football team;
 2-6     and
 2-7           WHEREAS, On December 12, 1998, Ricky Williams was awarded
 2-8     the Heisman Trophy and became the most decorated player in
 2-9     Longhorn history; he is the first person to twice win the
2-10     Dr. Pepper Doak Walker Award, named after the famous Southern
2-11     Methodist University player; in addition, he earned the Maxwell
2-12     Award, and he is a two-time All-American; and
2-13           WHEREAS, Gifted in many areas, Ricky is also a minor
2-14     league baseball player who was selected in the eighth round by
2-15     the Philadelphia Phillies in June of 1995; considered one of the
2-16     fastest prospects in that team's history, he has been clocked
2-17     under four seconds to first base; and
2-18           WHEREAS, A remarkably talented athlete, Ricky Williams is
2-19     also an exemplary individual of high moral principles, who is
2-20     committed to being a positive role model for young people; he is
2-21     an education major and hopes to eventually serve as an elementary
2-22     school teacher; and
2-23           WHEREAS, An active participant in the Longhorns' community
2-24     service efforts, Ricky regularly visits patients at the Austin
2-25     Children's Hospital, serves as a mentor at local schools, and is
2-26     a spokesman in the schools for the Longhorn Crime Stoppers program;
 3-1     and
 3-2           WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Ricky used his baseball
 3-3     bonuses to help further the education of his twin sister and
 3-4     younger sister at The University of Texas; he is dedicated to his
 3-5     mother, Sandy, who has been a source of support and encouragement
 3-6     to him throughout his life; and
 3-7           WHEREAS, A legendary figure in the history of college
 3-8     football, Ricky Williams is beloved and respected by his teammates,
 3-9     The University of Texas community, and sports followers throughout
3-10     the nation; now, therefore, be it
3-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-12     76th Legislature, hereby commend Ricky Williams on his superior
3-13     accomplishments throughout his college football career and extend
3-14     congratulations to him on his record-shattering performances and
3-15     on earning the prestigious Heisman Trophy; and, be it further
3-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3-17     Ricky Williams as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
