 1-4                                     of
 1-5                           Sylvia Livingston Terry
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Houston, Texas, in mourning the loss of Sylvia Livingston Terry,
 1-8     who died January 11, 1999, at the age of 59; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Sylvia Terry received bachelor's degrees in office
1-10     administration and business education, and a master's degree in
1-11     education from Texas Southern University; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Sylvia Terry had extensive teaching experience,
1-13     having taught at M. B. Smiley High School, North Forest
1-14     Independent School District, Houston Community College, and
1-15     Prairie View A&M University; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Her education and training as a teacher empowered
1-17     her to become an advocate for all teachers, and in 1988, she became
1-18     the first African-American female to be elected as President of the
1-19     American Federation of Teachers-North Forest, Local 4539, of the
1-20     Texas Federation of Teachers; and
1-21           WHEREAS, While she served her term as president of this
1-22     organization, Sylvia Terry attempted to "make dignity a reality"
1-23     for all those involved in public education, whether they were
1-24     community volunteers, students, employees, or teachers; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Sylvia's other affiliations and honors included her
 2-2     sustaining membership in the National Alliance of Black School
 2-3     Educators and a life membership in the National Association for
 2-4     Female Executives, an Outstanding Parent of the Year award, and
 2-5     a listing as an outstanding female executive in the 1993 and 1994
 2-6     edition of World Wide Registry of Who's Who; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Sylvia's crowning achievement in her life of
 2-8     service was attained when she founded and became the chief
 2-9     executive of LIFE'S BEAUTIFUL EDUCATIONAL CENTERS OF TEXAS,
2-10     INCORPORATED; through her endeavors, she received approval from
2-11     the Texas Education Agency for charter schools in career and
2-12     technology, fine arts, academics, and general equivalency
2-13     diplomas; and
2-14           WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished educator and
2-15     businesswoman, Sylvia Terry was respected for her many
2-16     accomplishments and was a beloved leader in her community; and
2-17           WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, generosity,
2-18     and vision, she gave unselfishly of her time to others; now,
2-19     therefore, be it
2-20           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-21     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-22     family of Sylvia Livingston Terry; and, be it further
2-23           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-24     those held dear by Sylvia Livingston Terry as an expression of
2-25     deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate
2-26     adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sylvia Livingston Terry.
