1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 102
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
 1-3     pleasure in recognizing the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority on
 1-4     the grand occasion of its Founder's Day luncheon; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The first Greek-letter sorority for
 1-6     African-American women founded at Howard University in
 1-7     Washington, D.C., Alpha Kappa Alpha continues the tradition
 1-8     of its mission statement, "Service To All Mankind," with its
 1-9     current emphasis on education, health, the black family,
1-10     economics, and the arts; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha was established on
1-12     January 15, 1908, and incorporated on January 20, 1913, and the
1-13     Greek organization has grown from the original founding 16
1-14     women at Howard University to more than 200,000 college women
1-15     on 882 campuses worldwide; and
1-16           WHEREAS, The Alpha Kappa Alpha actives and alums are
1-17     rightfully proud of their sorority's history and the bonds
1-18     of sisterhood and purpose which have grown over 90 years; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The sorority's annual celebration of the
1-20     vision and hopes of those first 16 women by coming together
1-21     for a Founder's Day luncheon almost a century later conveys
1-22     the promise for a continuing legacy through each Alpha Kappa
1-23     Alpha; and
1-24           WHEREAS, The 1999 theme for the sorority is "Remembering
 2-1     a Rich Heritage and Revitalizing Our Forces to Blaze New Trails"
 2-2     which strikes an appropriate chord for looking toward the 21st
 2-3     century and will be celebrated at the Founder's Day luncheon on
 2-4     February 20 in Dallas, Texas; now, therefore, be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-6     76th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to the Alpha
 2-7     Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha with best wishes for a
 2-8     meaningful Founder's Day celebration and continued success; and,
 2-9     be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-11     for the Alpha Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority
2-12     as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
