 1-3                                  In Memory
 1-4                                     of
 1-5                        The Honorable J. W. Buchanan
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Dumas and the State of Texas in mourning the loss of former
 1-8     state legislator J. W. "Buck" Buchanan, who died December 20, 1998,
 1-9     at the age of 90; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Born in 1908 in Oklahoma, he moved to Hansford in
1-11     1911 with his large family; he graduated from Spearman High School
1-12     as president of his class and then went to work as a cowboy; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Buck Buchanan ended his career as a cowboy in 1951,
1-14     and took a job with the Spearman Chamber of Commerce; this was the
1-15     beginning of his political life; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Buck Buchanan had a variety of occupations, and he
1-17     was known best for his involvement with water districts; and
1-18           WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman was executive director
1-19     of the North Plains Water District from 1955 to 1980 and was a
1-20     board member of the Palo Duro Water Authority until January, 1998;
1-21     and
1-22           WHEREAS, A former state legislator, he served as a state
1-23     representative from 1959-1962 and 1984-1986; he had a significant
1-24     influence while in the legislature, bringing people together to
 2-1     emphasize the limits of pumping groundwater; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, One who reveled in serving his community, he was
 2-3     devoted to the people of Moore County; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, An exemplary public servant, Buck Buchanan earned
 2-5     the respect and friendship of all with whom he was associated; he
 2-6     handled his responsibilities efficiently and with consideration of
 2-7     those he served so conscientiously; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Admired for his accomplishments, this esteemed
 2-9     gentleman will be greatly missed by his loved ones; now, therefore,
2-10     be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-13     members of his family; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
2-15     daughter as an expression of great sympathy from the Texas Senate,
2-16     and when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-17     J. W. "Buck" Buchanan.
