1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 133 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas congratulates 1-4 Ronald K. Calgaard on the occasion of his retirement and an 1-5 unprecedented 20 years of exemplary service as president of 1-6 Trinity University; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Under President Calgaard's successful program of 1-8 economic development, the university's endowment grew to more 1-9 than $476 million, a growth of four times the endowment in 1978, 1-10 while his energetic style of fund-raising has increased the number 1-11 of scholarships for prospective gifted students with limited means 1-12 for college tuition; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Trinity's undergraduate library has evolved into a 1-14 model for the nation's universities with the latest media service 1-15 and technological equipment, 820,868 books and bound periodicals, 1-16 and a $1 million annual acquisition budget; and 1-17 WHEREAS, President Calgaard has created a more academically 1-18 gifted, diversified, and closely knit student body by raising 1-19 admission standards, recruiting from all areas of the nation with 1-20 regard to race and socio-economic backgrounds of students, and by 1-21 having the undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, and juniors live on 1-22 campus in order to promote unity and school loyalty; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Professor Calgaard's considerable energy has been 1-24 instrumental in creating a nationally enviable undergraduate program 2-1 in liberal arts and sciences, and he has successfully recruited 2-2 talented, dedicated educators to achieve his goal; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Ronald Calgaard is also a devoted husband to his 2-4 wife, Genie, who shares his commitment to Trinity University and 2-5 San Antonio; together, they work to achieve a sense of community 2-6 between the university and the Alamo City through such programs as 2-7 free Christmas concerts at the university for the public; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Both Ronald and Genie Calgaard have left their 2-9 personal stamps of commitment on the city, in addition to the 2-10 university, by participating in civic projects in San Antonio and 2-11 in the First Presbyterian Church; Ronald has served as chairman for 2-12 the United Way campaign and on various boards in San Antonio, while 2-13 Genie is a tireless worker in hospice and the botanical center; 2-14 now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of Texas, 76th Legislature, 2-16 hereby commend President Ronald K. Calgaard for his 20 years of 2-17 dedicated service to Trinity University with best regards for his 2-18 future endeavors; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-20 Ronald K.
