 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 158
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Associated General Contractors of Texas is
 1-4     celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and the Texas Senate
 1-5     is proud to recognize this impressive achievement; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, One of the most outstanding trade groups in Texas,
 1-7     the association has more than 900 members today; about 350 are
 1-8     prime contractors and the rest are associate members; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, When the association was founded, its members
1-10     primarily constructed railroads and worked for counties, cities,
1-11     and other public agencies; after creation of the Texas Highway
1-12     Department and funding from two gasoline tax raises, the highway
1-13     department had access to the funds available through the 1956
1-14     Interstate Highway Act, and construction of highways began in
1-15     earnest; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Among the earliest members of the Associated General
1-17     Contractors of Texas that are still active are H. B. Zachry Company
1-18     of San Antonio and Brown and Root of Houston; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Building more than 95 percent of all highway
1-20     construction, the members also produce more than 90 percent
1-21     of all other engineering-construction, including water and sewer
1-22     lines, utility plants, and other facilities such as the Amistad
1-23     Dam on the Rio Grande and the Falcon Dam south of Laredo; and
1-24           WHEREAS, With its headquarters in Austin, the Associated
 2-1     General Contractors of Texas has field offices in Houston, the
 2-2     Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and San Antonio; the Texas chapter
 2-3     has had more national presidents than any other and has twice been
 2-4     recognized as Chapter of the Year; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Heavily involved in state activity, numerous members
 2-6     have been appointed by governors to commissions and boards such as
 2-7     the Texas Air Control Board, the General Services Commission, and
 2-8     the Board of Professional Engineers; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Under the able guidance of executive vice president
2-10     Thomas L. Johnson since 1970, the state chapter has grown and
2-11     prospered, and its success can be credited to the active
2-12     participation of its membership, its desire to support those
2-13     who want a strong infrastructure, and its interest in the
2-14     political process; now, therefore, be it
2-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-16     76th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Associated General
2-17     Contractors of Texas on the auspicious occasion of its 75th
2-18     anniversary; and, be it further
2-19           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-20     association as an expression of the highest regard and esteem of
2-21     the Texas Senate.
