 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 159
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate takes pleasure in recognizing
 1-4     February 9 as Kidney Day at the Capitol and in welcoming
 1-5     visitors from the Renal Coalition of Texas and the National
 1-6     Kidney Foundation affiliates of Texas to the State Capitol;
 1-7     and
 1-8           WHEREAS, A nonprofit organization whose goal and mission
 1-9     is to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, the National
1-10     Kidney Foundation wants to increase the availability of all
1-11     organs for transplantation and to improve the health and
1-12     well-being of families and individuals affected by these
1-13     diseases; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The two organizations are working to achieve
1-15     several objectives; they want to increase fund raising to
1-16     allow for continuing present programs and the development
1-17     of new ones, to monitor health policy development, and to
1-18     increase the public's knowledge of kidney disease; and
1-19           WHEREAS, In addition, the groups hope to expand and
1-20     develop patient services and community resources, to support
1-21     the continuing education of health professionals, and to gain
1-22     adequate assistance for research training; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Seeking the answers to the prevention of kidney
1-24     disease, health professionals and lay volunteers are working
 2-1     together to ensure that those who have the illness are the
 2-2     recipients of the best possible care; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Some solutions found within the last 25 years
 2-4     to treat patients with end-stage renal failure are hemodialysis,
 2-5     peritoneal dialysis, or transplantation; these vital and
 2-6     far-reaching efforts deserve the support and appreciation of
 2-7     all; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Volunteers and health care professionals of the
 2-9     National Kidney Foundation should be lauded for their outstanding
2-10     care of the patients who have kidney problems; now, therefore,
2-11     be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     76th Legislature, hereby declare February 9, 1999, and the
2-14     second Tuesday of February each succeeding year as Kidney Day
2-15     at the Capitol; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-17     five affiliates of the National Kidney Foundation as an expression
2-18     of admiration and appreciation of the Texas Senate.
