1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 160
 1-2           WHEREAS, The American Red Cross is always there, under
 1-3     the same trusted symbol, serving our community and touching more
 1-4     lives in new ways by providing lifesaving information, training,
 1-5     and disaster relief to individuals and families for the past
 1-6     117 years; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The Red Cross is not a government agency, but it
 1-8     is designated by the Congress of the United States as the lead
 1-9     voluntary agency responsible for national and international relief
1-10     in times of peace and is funded through the generosity of the
1-11     American people; and
1-12           WHEREAS, The American Red Cross has brought and continues
1-13     to bring comfort and practical assistance to the victims of more
1-14     than 63 disasters just last year, from single-family house fires to
1-15     the devastating floods which swept through one-third of our state
1-16     in October, 1998; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Through health and safety classes, Red Cross has
1-18     provided thousands of Texans with vital knowledge of CPR, first
1-19     aid, and water safety and consequently saved an untold number of
1-20     lives; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The American Red Cross Ready Texan program, which
1-22     allows state employees the freedom to assist in Texas disaster
1-23     relief operations, is a shining example of Texans' spirit of
1-24     volunteerism and compassion; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, March has been designated as Red Cross Month by
 2-2     Presidential proclamation to celebrate the achievements of the
 2-3     Red Cross and the comfort it brings to the lives of so many Texans;
 2-4     now, therefore, be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-6     76th Legislature, hereby urge all Texans to fulfill the call
 2-7     for volunteerism sounded most recently by Governor George W. Bush
 2-8     and help their fellow Texans in need by volunteering or contributing
 2-9     to their local Red Cross chapter; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-11     the board of directors, staff, contributors, and, most of all,
2-12     the volunteers of the American Red Cross of Central Texas as an
2-13     expression of sincerest appreciation from the Texas Senate.
