 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 162
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to join the citizens
 1-4     of Edinburg in the joyous celebration of Edinburg Day at the
 1-5     State Capitol on February 10, 1999; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Originally known as Chapin, the community serves
 1-7     as the western gateway to the Lower Rio Grande Valley and as the
 1-8     Hidalgo County seat; it first enjoyed a vibrant economy based
 1-9     on ranching, but successful irrigation efforts and a temperate
1-10     climate have transformed the area into one of the nation's leading
1-11     producers of vegetables and citrus fruits, and the community is
1-12     also home to many thriving industries; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Edinburg's outstanding civic leadership and
1-14     dramatic expansion have generated significant economic growth;
1-15     recent construction has further enhanced the state-of-the-art
1-16     Edinburg Regional Medical Center, and new engineering and
1-17     science buildings have expanded educational opportunities at
1-18     one of the valley's premier institutions of higher learning,
1-19     The University of Texas--Pan American; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Edinburg boasts an active citizenry who champion
1-21     a variety of worthy causes through their involvement in such
1-22     organizations as the Edinburg 2020 Citizens Advisory Committees,
1-23     the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, the Edinburg Hospital Authority,
1-24     and the Edinburg Lions Club, and their stalwart commitment to
 2-1     these and many other groups has made the community a better place
 2-2     to live, work, and rear a family; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The City of Edinburg has earned well-deserved
 2-4     acclaim for its exceptional achievements, and for the second
 2-5     time, it has received the prestigious All-America City designation
 2-6     from the National Civic League, a feat rarely matched by other
 2-7     communities; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Recognizing that the blessings of liberty must be
 2-9     continually safeguarded, Edinburg has always been willing to pay
2-10     the ultimate price for freedom by sending its best and brightest
2-11     citizens to fight for America's highest ideals; the community is
2-12     home to people from all walks of life, and it draws its strengths
2-13     and achievements from its diversity and proud history; and
2-14           WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Edinburg has distinguished
2-15     itself as one of our state's most outstanding communities, and
2-16     it is indeed fitting that the city and its residents receive
2-17     appropriate legislative recognition for their many accomplishments;
2-18     now, therefore, be it
2-19           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-20     76th Legislature, hereby designate February 10, 1999, as
2-21     Edinburg Day at the Capitol and welcome the members of the
2-22     city's delegation on their visit to Austin; and, be it further
2-23           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
2-24     prepared for the members of the Edinburg City Council as an
2-25     expression of high regard by the Texas Senate.
