1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 166 1-3 WHEREAS, Ruben Bonilla, Jr., was National President of the 1-4 League of United Latin American Citizens from 1979 to 1981, and the 1-5 Texas Senate is pleased to recognize him on the 20th anniversary of 1-6 his past presidency; and 1-7 WHEREAS, With about 115,000 members in the United States and 1-8 Puerto Rico, the League of United Latin American Citizens has 1-9 focused on civil rights, education, and employment for Hispanics; 1-10 the local councils have voter registration drives, develop 1-11 low-income housing units, and supply funds for scholarships for 1-12 Hispanic students; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Ruben Bonilla, Jr., was born in Calvert in 1-14 Robertson County and is a graduate of The University of Texas at 1-15 Austin with a bachelor of arts degree; he earned his doctor of 1-16 jurisprudence from The University of Texas School of Law in 1971; 1-17 currently he is an attorney and partner with the law firm of 1-18 Bonilla and Chapa; and 1-19 WHEREAS, While he was National President, he provided the 1-20 vital leadership needed to guide the largest and oldest Hispanic 1-21 organization in the United States; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Continually active in community organizations, 1-23 Ruben Bonilla is a commissioner of the Port Authority of 1-24 Corpus Christi, a member of the Board of Governors of Leadership 2-1 Corpus Christi, a mentor of the Puente Program at Del Mar College, 2-2 and a member of the President's Council of Texas A&M University at 2-3 Corpus Christi; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A leader in his profession, Mr. Bonilla is a 2-5 member of the American Bar Association, the Texas Trial Lawyers 2-6 Association, the State Bar of Texas, and the American Trial Lawyers 2-7 Association; and 2-8 WHEREAS, His wise counsel was sought by four American 2-9 presidents, and Mr. Bonilla has been invited to meetings at the 2-10 White House by Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, 2-11 and Bill Clinton; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Honored by many organizations, Ruben Bonilla, Jr., 2-13 has been named Recipient of the National Conference for Community 2-14 and Justice Humanitarian Award in 1999, designated Hero for Children 2-15 by the State Board of Education in 1998, and named winner of the 2-16 National Boys and Girls Club Leadership Award; such a concerned and 2-17 active citizen is certainly worthy of legislative recognition; now, 2-18 therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-20 76th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud the many 2-21 contributions of Ruben Bonilla, Jr., and congratulate him on 2-22 the 20th Anniversary of his past presidency of the League of 2-23 United Latin American Citizens; and, be it further 2-24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-25 Mr. Bonilla as an expression of the highest regard of the 2-26 Texas Senate. 3-1 Truan 3-2 Armbrister Gallegos Nixon 3-3 Barrientos Harris Ogden 3-4 Bernsen Haywood Ratliff 3-5 Bivins Jackson Shapiro 3-6 Brown Lindsay Shapleigh 3-7 Cain Lucio Sibley 3-8 Carona Luna Wentworth 3-9 Duncan Madla West 3-10 Ellis Moncrief Whitmire 3-11 Fraser Nelson Zaffirini 3-12 Perry, President of the Senate 3-13 ______________________________________ 3-14 President of the Senate 3-15 I hereby certify that the above 3-16 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-17 on February 8, 1999. 3-18 ______________________________________ 3-19 Secretary of the Senate 3-20 ______________________________________ 3-21 Dean of the Senate
