1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 206 1-3 WHEREAS, The 62nd anniversary of Charro Days in the 1-4 City of Brownsville will be celebrated this year on February 25 1-5 through February 28, 1999, and the Texas Senate is proud to 1-6 recognize this eagerly awaited festival; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Commemorating the Brownsville community's bicultural 1-8 and bilingual heritage in a spirit of friendship and harmony, this 1-9 annual occasion is always a highlight of the year; and 1-10 WHEREAS, From both sides of the Texas-Mexico border, 1-11 celebrants gather and participate in festivities which include 1-12 parades, carnival acts, traditional Mexican rodeo contests, and 1-13 grand balls; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The Charro Days fiesta has been held since 1938; 1-15 it pays tribute to the charro horseman of Mexico who possessed 1-16 great riding skills; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Charro Days is a ceremonial observation of the 1-18 fusing together of several cultures; colorful costumes which 1-19 represent old Spain, Andalusia, and France also show the influence 1-20 of the Indian culture of the Toltec and the Aztec; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Combining the charm and culture of this two-nation 1-22 area, Charro Days is sponsored by many generous individuals and 1-23 organizations; they include the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, 1-24 Mr. Amigo Association, Charro Days, Incorporated, the Brownsville 2-1 Convention and Visitors Bureau, Sombrero Festival, Incorporated, 2-2 the mayor and city commissioners of Brownsville, and local and 2-3 private schools; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-5 76th Legislature, hereby commend all who help organize and 2-6 sponsor Charro Days and extend best wishes for an enjoyable 2-7 fiesta on the occasion of its 62nd anniversary; and, be it 2-8 further 2-9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as 2-10 an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate. 2-11 Lucio 2-12 ______________________________________ 2-13 President of the Senate 2-14 I hereby certify that the above 2-15 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-16 on February 15, 1999. 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 Secretary of the Senate 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 Member, Texas Senate
