1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 218 1-3 WHEREAS, On February 17, 1999, many proud residents of 1-4 Henderson County will gather in Austin to celebrate Henderson County 1-5 Day at the State Capitol; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Henderson County, named for the first governor of 1-7 Texas, James Pinckney Henderson, was created on April 27, 1846, from 1-8 parts of Nacogdoches and Houston counties, and it is bordered by the 1-9 Trinity River on the west and the Neches River and Lake Palestine on 1-10 the east; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The county seat is Athens, which is renowned as 1-12 the official birthplace of the hamburger and the Black-Eyed Pea 1-13 Capital of the World, as well as the site of the Texas Freshwater 1-14 Fisheries Center, a world-class aquarium and hatchery complex with 1-15 over 300,000 gallons of aquaria; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Other thriving towns in Henderson County include 1-17 Gun Barrel City, a recreation, retirement, and retail center; 1-18 Malakoff, the gateway to Cedar Creek Lake and the home of the 1998 1-19 bi-district champion Malakoff High School Tigers; and Chandler, 1-20 which is located on the north shore of Lake Palestine and is the 1-21 site of the Chandler Pow Wow; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The fertile terrain and temperate climate of 1-23 Henderson County have made the area a major production center for 1-24 agricultural commodities such as grain, nursery crops, vegetables, 2-1 melons, hardwood timber, cattle, horses, and swine; in addition, 2-2 this region is rich in oil, gas, clays, lignite, sulphur, sand, and 2-3 gravel, and it is also a sportsman's paradise, providing outdoorsmen 2-4 with some of Texas' best fishing and hunting; and 2-5 WHEREAS, This unique county features many exciting annual 2-6 events, including the Texas Fiddlers' Contest and Reunion, the 2-7 Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree, the Henderson County PRCA Stampede Rodeo, 2-8 the Athens Triathlon, the Henderson County Livestock Show, the 2-9 Fletcher Davis Hamburger Cook-off, the Cornbread Festival, and the 2-10 Christmas Extravaganza; and 2-11 WHEREAS, While visiting the State Capitol, the 2-12 Henderson County contingent will participate in a luncheon with 2-13 their legislative representatives as well as meet with various 2-14 committees and state agencies with whom they will discuss issues 2-15 of interest to Henderson County residents; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Henderson County continues to be one of the 2-17 Lone Star State's greatest assets and an outstanding place in which 2-18 to live, work, and raise a family; it is indeed appropriate that 2-19 the citizenry of this county be given special recognition at this 2-20 time; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-22 76th Legislature, hereby recognize February 17, 1999, as 2-23 Henderson County Day at the State Capitol and join the citizens 2-24 of that county in paying tribute to one of Texas' finest 2-25 communities; and, be it further 2-26 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared 3-1 for prominent display in Henderson County as a commemoration of this 3-2 grand occasion and as an expression of the high regard by the 3-3 Texas Senate. 3-4 Nixon 3-5 ______________________________________ 3-6 President of the Senate 3-7 I hereby certify that the above 3-8 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-9 on February 17, 1999. 3-10 ______________________________________ 3-11 Secretary of the Senate 3-12 ______________________________________ 3-13 Member, Texas Senate
