1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 219 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in welcoming the proud citizens of Panola County, 1-5 who will be visiting the State Capitol on February 24, 1999, 1-6 to observe Panola County Day; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Panola County was created from Shelby and Harrison 1-8 counties by the First Legislature of Texas on March 30, 1846; the 1-9 county seat of Panola County is Carthage, and it dates back to 1-10 1848 when 100 acres were donated for a town site; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The population of the bustling small town of Carthage 1-12 is nearly 7,000, and it is the trade center for the region; also 1-13 located there are the New Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, the 1-14 Jim Reeves Memorial, the Old Jail Museum, and a genealogical 1-15 library; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The Indian word for cotton is ponolo, the source 1-17 of the name of Panola County; the area is famed for its production 1-18 of cotton, corn, potatoes, sugar cane, peanuts, tomatoes, melons, 1-19 peaches, and other vegetables and fruits; and 1-20 WHEREAS, With its location on the Texas-Louisiana border, 1-21 this illustrious county is blessed with rich soil and an abundant 1-22 water supply, and its leading meat products are broilers, hogs, 1-23 and cattle; and 1-24 WHEREAS, In this area, job opportunities are plentiful with 2-1 an abundant local employment pool of dedicated men and women; there 2-2 are service-oriented businesses, specialty and antique shops, 2-3 commercial food processing, timber, light manufacturing, and oil 2-4 and gas processing; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Contributing to the development of the State of Texas, 2-6 the stalwart citizens of Panola County have achieved a great deal 2-7 for their community and their county; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-9 76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere best wishes to Panola County 2-10 for a happy and successful Panola County Day; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-12 Panola County as a memento of this grand occasion and as an 2-13 expression of the high regard and esteem of the Texas Senate. 2-14 Nixon 2-15 Armbrister Gallegos Ogden 2-16 Barrientos Harris Ratliff 2-17 Bernsen Haywood Shapiro 2-18 Bivins Jackson Shapleigh 2-19 Brown Lindsay Sibley 2-20 Cain Lucio Truan 2-21 Carona Luna Wentworth 2-22 Duncan Madla West 2-23 Ellis Moncrief Whitmire 2-24 Fraser Nelson Zaffirini 2-25 Perry, President of the Senate 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 President of the Senate 2-28 I hereby certify that the above 2-29 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-30 on February 24, 1999. 2-31 ______________________________________ 2-32 Secretary of the Senate 2-33 ______________________________________ 2-34 Member, Texas Senate
