 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 220
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
 1-4     join the citizens of Jasper, Texas, in a joyous celebration of
 1-5     Jasper Day at the State Capitol on March 8, 1999; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The original settlement of Jasper began in 1824
 1-7     when John Bevil established his homestead on the present site of
 1-8     the city, and growth of the settlement continued until Bevil had
 1-9     become home to 30 families by 1830; and
1-10           WHEREAS, The General Council of the area changed the
1-11     name of Bevil to Jasper in December, 1835, in honor of
1-12     Sergeant William Jasper, an American Revolutionary hero;
1-13     the site of John Bevil's home became the county seat when
1-14     Jasper County was created March 17 of the next year as one
1-15     of the original counties of the Republic of Texas and remains
1-16     the county seat today, almost 163 years later; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Jasper is located in far East Texas on
1-18     Sandy Creek and is blessed with the natural beauty of Angelina
1-19     National Forest and the nearby lakes, B. A. Steinhagen,
1-20     Sam Rayburn, and Toledo Bend, all of which make Jasper a perfect
1-21     vacation spot for those tourists who enjoy camping, hiking, fishing,
1-22     and boating activities; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Nearby forests are abundant in the natural
1-24     resources which provide the raw materials for wood industries;
 2-1     the sawmills and the plywood mill are responsible for a major
 2-2     portion of the Jasper economy, in addition to oil and gas
 2-3     production, stock raising, and bountiful harvests of vegetables,
 2-4     fruit, and pecans; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Jasper is a closely knit community that values its
 2-6     ties with the past while it looks optimistically to the future;
 2-7     crises in the community only serve to bring out the caring nature
 2-8     of this Texas town for all of its citizens, and the healing begins
 2-9     together; and
2-10           WHEREAS, It is with pleasure that the Texas Senate honor
2-11     this East Texas city and its outstanding citizens; now, therefore,
2-12     be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-14     76th Legislature, hereby recognize March 8, 1999, as Jasper Day
2-15     and extend best wishes to its residents for a most enjoyable
2-16     and rewarding event; and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-18     Jasper as a memento of this special day and as an expression
2-19     of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
