1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 222 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Houston, 1-4 Texas, on the grand occasion of its 78th anniversary, which 1-5 is being celebrated during the month of March, 1999; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church has 1-7 its roots in the Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church, which 1-8 was organized in February of 1921 by a group of people who met 1-9 in the home of Reverend W. H. Haynes; soon thereafter, a church 1-10 building was erected, and Reverend Haynes served as pastor for 1-11 10 years; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The Reverend S. B. Parker became pastor of the 1-13 church in 1945, and under his guidance the church edifice was 1-14 rebuilt, more property for the church was purchased, and the 1-15 congregation grew extensively; the name of the church was then 1-16 changed to Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Over the years, the Greater Zion Missionary 1-18 Baptist Church has ministered faithfully to the spiritual needs 1-19 of innumerable Christians; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Due to the guidance and wise stewardship of its 1-21 pastors, and the outstanding leadership of its current pastor, 1-22 Reverend Curtis C. Lewis, Sr., the church has continued to grow 1-23 and to undertake many worthy projects within the community; and 1-24 WHEREAS, The church has become an invaluable source of 2-1 strength for its members during their hardships and in times of 2-2 bereavement; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The celebration of its 78th anniversary is an 2-4 expression of the church's enduring commitment to its holy mission 2-5 and its dedication to tradition and unity among Christians; now, 2-6 therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-8 76th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and 2-9 members of Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church on the jubilant 2-10 occasion of its 78th anniversary; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-12 church as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-13 Whitmire 2-14 ______________________________________ 2-15 President of the Senate 2-16 I hereby certify that the above 2-17 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-18 on February 16, 1999. 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 Secretary of the Senate 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 Member, Texas Senate
