1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 235 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 recognize Stephen F. Austin State University on the occasion of 1-5 its 75th anniversary and is proud to welcome the members of the 1-6 university's Student Government Association on their visit to the 1-7 Capitol; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University was founded by 1-9 the Texas Legislature in 1921 and opened its doors in Nacogdoches 1-10 to its first students on September 18, 1923; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The school began as a teacher's college with only 1-12 158 students, but following World War II the college enrollment 1-13 dramatically increased with the return of veterans who used the 1-14 educational opportunities afforded by the G.I. Bill; and 1-15 WHEREAS, During the 1960s, the university underwent another 1-16 period of rapid growth; it began attracting students from around 1-17 the state and became a major statewide institution of higher 1-18 learning for all Texans; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Today, Stephen F. Austin State University offers 1-20 unique student-oriented programs and enjoys substantial popularity 1-21 within our state's university system, educating more than 12,500 1-22 students each term; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The outstanding leaders of the university include 1-24 such presidents as Alton William Birdwell, Dr. Paul Lewis Boynton, 2-1 Dr. Ralph Wright Steen, Dr. William R. Johnson, Dr. Donald E. Bowen, 2-2 and current president Dr. Dan Angel; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The university focuses on responding to the 2-4 needs of its changing student population and on using innovative 2-5 techniques in preparing students for their vocations; its spectrum 2-6 of subject matter and majors includes such programs as nursing, 2-7 social work, criminal justice, agriculture, communications, and 2-8 forestry; and 2-9 WHEREAS, The Stephen F. Austin State University Student 2-10 Government Association has proved to be a valuable asset to the 2-11 institution; the association is an effective instrument through 2-12 which students can express their needs, concerns, and suggestions 2-13 to the faculty and staff; and 2-14 WHEREAS, The 50-member Student Government Association is 2-15 comprised of three branches: the legislative branch, consisting 2-16 of the Student Senate and College Senators; the executive branch, 2-17 consisting of Student Body Officers; and the judicial branch, 2-18 consisting of the members of the Supreme Court; and 2-19 WHEREAS, The faculty, administration, and members of the 2-20 board of trustees of Stephen F. Austin State University are 2-21 committed to providing the students of our state with a first-rate 2-22 education, and their success is evident in the excellent reputation 2-23 the university enjoys today; now, therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-25 76th Legislature, hereby express congratulations to 2-26 Stephen F. Austin State University on the occasion of 3-1 its 75th anniversary and extend appreciation for its many 3-2 contributions to higher education in our state; and, be it 3-3 further 3-4 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-5 Stephen F.
