1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 239 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Paul D. Hope 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-7 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Paul D. Hope, who died 1-8 November 20, 1998; and 1-9 WHEREAS, This gentle man had devoted a lifetime to helping 1-10 others learn about and appreciate the incomparable Texas outdoors 1-11 and its wildlife through his writing, photography, filmmaking, and 1-12 radio broadcasts; and 1-13 WHEREAS, He faithfully served his country for six years in 1-14 the United States Air Force, and upon returning home, he earned a 1-15 journalism degree from The University of Texas at Austin; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Although a man of letters, he was more a doer of 1-17 deeds, relentlessly going out of his way to help anyone needing a 1-18 hand along life's way, be it the needy in his church or an aspiring 1-19 writer seeking a niche; and 1-20 WHEREAS, He rose through the ranks of outdoor journalism 1-21 working on newspapers in San Angelo and Tyler, television in Waco, 1-22 and filmmaking for the Forest Service in Bryan and as a writer, 1-23 photographer, filmmaker, and information specialist for the Texas 1-24 Parks and Wildlife Department in Austin, retiring after 30 years 2-1 with the distinction of having published over 600 fishing reports; 2-2 and 2-3 WHEREAS, He served the outdoor press as executive director 2-4 of the Texas Outdoor Writers Association for 25 years, receiving 2-5 the organization's highest honor, the L. A. Wilke Award; and 2-6 WHEREAS, His woodworking artistry led him to tool the 2-7 formation of the now nationally prominent Mesquite Woodworking 2-8 Club; and 2-9 WHEREAS, He served God as a lector for Sacred Heart 2-10 Catholic Church for over 20 years, and he served his wife and 2-11 family for 40 years; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the wife 2-14 and family of Paul D. Hope, his many friends, and the Texas Outdoor 2-15 Writers Association, which sadly begins its annual conference in 2-16 Lake Jackson this week without him; and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-18 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 2-19 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so 2-20 in memory of Paul D.
