1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 247 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-4 recognize Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) as they 1-5 visit the State Capitol on February 9, 1999; and 1-6 WHEREAS, This group of students is from Irving and Nimitz 1-7 high schools, and they are dedicated to achieving the goals 1-8 established by Students Against Destructive Decisions: to help 1-9 others who struggle from making destructive decisions, such as 1-10 underage drinking, drinking and driving and using illegal drugs; 1-11 to be there for a person in their time of need; to make everyone 1-12 aware that drugs can kill, and that many young adults, along 1-13 with older adults, die each day due to a destructive decision 1-14 that could have been avoided; and to help others avoid self 1-15 destruction; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The mission statement of Students Against 1-17 Destructive Decisions is to provide students with the best 1-18 prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the 1-19 issues of underage drinking, drunk driving, drug abuse, and 1-20 other destructive decisions; and 1-21 WHEREAS, When each new chapter of Students Against 1-22 Destructive Decisions is formed, the sponsor usually speaks to 1-23 the school about the personal reasons for starting a chapter in 1-24 her community; in this case, sponsor Tammy Cain lost her daughter, 2-1 Tiffani, to a drunk driver; Tiffani was a graduate of Irving High 2-2 School; and 2-3 WHEREAS, In 1998, Irving High School was hard hit and 2-4 lost one recent graduate and three students who were still 2-5 attending school due to destructive decisions made by either 2-6 drivers or those who were passengers of a drinking driver; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The members of Students Against Destructive 2-8 Decisions have as their main goal persuading Congress that drunk 2-9 driving penalties should be stronger; they intend to set an example 2-10 as positive role models and introduce the idea that a life free of 2-11 drugs and alcohol is the right choice; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Students Against Destructive 2-14 Decisions as they visit their State Capitol and wish them every 2-15 success in their future endeavors; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an 2-17 expression of the high regard and esteem of the Texas Senate. 2-18 Nelson 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 President of the Senate 2-21 I hereby certify that the above 2-22 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-23 on February 18, 1999. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 Secretary of the Senate 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 Member, Texas Senate
