1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 271
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-3     recognizing the members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association
 1-4     on the occasion of the Texas Retired School Personnel Day--A
 1-5     Celebration of Volunteerism on March 22, 1999; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, This special celebration of volunteerism is an
 1-7     appropriate time to pay tribute to the many members of the Texas
 1-8     Retired Teachers Association who volunteer so generously each
 1-9     year of their time, energy, and expertise to schools, hospitals,
1-10     churches, and other facilities in the community; and
1-11           WHEREAS, The Texas Retired Teachers Association is the
1-12     only state organization that works exclusively on behalf of
1-13     retired public school employees and at the same time offers them
1-14     opportunities for service and volunteerism; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Founded in 1953, the association has grown from
1-16     65 members to over 36,500 members and serves its members through
1-17     its standing committees, which include community participation,
1-18     retirement education, informative and protective services, and
1-19     health care; and
1-20           WHEREAS, In 1997, the association's members contributed
1-21     5,714,902 hours of volunteer services to their schools and
1-22     communities, which resulted in a value of professional time of
1-23     $74,293,276; since 1990, members have contributed 42,125,527
1-24     volunteer hours to schools and communities, which reaches a
 2-1     professional time valued at $510,140,131.97; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, An exemplary organization, the Texas Retired
 2-3     Teachers Association attempts to promote the professional,
 2-4     economic, intellectual, and social well-being of all retired
 2-5     school personnel and to encourage retired school personnel to
 2-6     give voluntarily of their time, talent, and training to the
 2-7     field of education, their community, and state; now, therefore,
 2-8     be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-10     76th Legislature, hereby commend the many volunteers of the Texas
2-11     Retired Teachers Association and extend to them best wishes for
2-12     continued success in the future; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-14     the association as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
