1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 279
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas congratulates
 1-3     Luna's Tortillas on its celebration of 75 years of family
 1-4     ownership and service to the Dallas community; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Founded by Maria Luna on February 24, 1924,
 1-6     Luna's Tortillas is the oldest tortilla factory in Dallas and is
 1-7     still located at its original address, 1615 McKinney Avenue; it
 1-8     has the distinction of being one of only a few original businesses
 1-9     still remaining in Dallas' first Mexican-American community, known
1-10     as Little Mexico; and
1-11           WHEREAS, In 1923 Senora Luna arrived in Dallas with her
1-12     two children, Carmen and Francisco, from her native Mexico and
1-13     began work in a grocery store in Little Mexico grinding masa and
1-14     making dough for tortillas; she was a woman with drive and vision,
1-15     and from that humble beginning, she bought the grinder from the
1-16     grocery store owner and began grinding corn for the neighborhood
1-17     families; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Her business evolved and prospered into the
1-19     thriving neighborhood business that it is today, beginning with
1-20     a total of 500 tortillas a day produced in 1924 to the present
1-21     1,500 dozen made in an hour; and
1-22           WHEREAS, After graduation from high school, Carmen and
1-23     Francisco went to work for their mother to create a family
1-24     business, with Francisco still acting as the owner of Luna's
 2-1     Tortillas; now, therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-3     76th Legislature, hereby commend the Luna family on the
 2-4     remarkable success story of their family business with best
 2-5     wishes for their joyous 75th anniversary open house on
 2-6     February 24, 1999; and, be it further
 2-7           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 2-8     the Luna family as an expression of the high regard of the
 2-9     Texas Senate.
