 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 282
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
 1-4     congratulate Dr. Barbara R. Hatton on being honored by Texas College
 1-5     in Tyler, Texas, as a woman who has changed the world in the field
 1-6     of education; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Dr. Hatton currently serves as the president of
 1-8     Knoxville College and is a lifelong educator who has distinguished
 1-9     herself in each position she has accepted, achieving many "firsts"
1-10     in her quest to improve education; she was the first woman to
1-11     serve as president of South Carolina State University, the first
1-12     woman dean of education at Tuskegee University, and the first
1-13     African-American woman professor at Stanford University in the
1-14     School of Education; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Because other educators value her wise counsel,
1-16     Dr. Hatton has been included on a number of boards and commissions,
1-17     a few of which include the Board of Directors of the Association
1-18     of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, the Commission on
1-19     Educational Quality of the Southern Regional Education Board, the
1-20     advisory committee of the College Board's Equity 2000 project,
1-21     and the Board of the South Carolina Governor's School for Science
1-22     and Mathematics; a founding member of the National Board for
1-23     Professional Teaching Standards, she was a former Deputy Director
1-24     of the Education and Culture program for the Ford Foundation; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, For her many contributions to the field of
 2-2     education, Dr. Hatton has been the recipient of a number of
 2-3     awards from different groups who are grateful for her dedication
 2-4     to her profession; among these awards are the ROSE Award from
 2-5     the University of Southern California School of Education, the
 2-6     Drum Major for Justice Award of the Southern Christian Leadership
 2-7     Conference, the Howard University Alumni Award for Distinguished
 2-8     Postgraduate Achievement, and the Chief Manuelito Award of the
 2-9     Navajo Nation; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-11     76th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Barbara R. Hatton for
2-12     making a difference in the field of education; and, be it
2-13     further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-15     Dr. Hatton in recognition of her award from Texas College with
2-16     best wishes to her from the Texas Senate for the presentation
2-17     ceremony on March 3, 1999.
