1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 283
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride
 1-3     in recognizing Cynthia Cooper, a Women's National Basketball
 1-4     Association superstar, who has been selected to represent the
 1-5     field of athletics at the Texas College event, "Women Changing
 1-6     The World"; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Cynthia is a dynamic athlete who played basketball
 1-8     in Europe for 11 years before returning to the United States and
 1-9     impressing people across the globe by her 1997 successful emergence
1-10     on the United States basketball scene; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Accolades for Cynthia's outstanding athletic
1-12     accomplishments include earning the 1998 Espy Award as Women's Pro
1-13     Basketball Player of the Year; and
1-14           WHEREAS, A league Most Valuable Player, Cynthia has also
1-15     emerged as a highly respected community leader who has undertaken
1-16     a host of charitable causes; she has established her own Cooper
1-17     Foundation with Coop Hoops for Kids, a program which encourages
1-18     corporations to donate dollars for every three-point shot she
1-19     makes; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Funds from her program provide needy and deserving
1-21     youngsters with scholarships, assist disadvantaged children with
1-22     cancer, and support breast cancer research and awareness efforts;
1-23     and
1-24           WHEREAS, Cynthia has also adopted a Houston elementary
 2-1     school, Bastian, where she will oversee tutoring programs, and
 2-2     she frequently serves as a speaker at local boys and girls clubs;
 2-3     and
 2-4           WHEREAS, An exemplary young lady, Cynthia Cooper is a source
 2-5     of strength to people of all ages, and she exhibits an enthusiasm
 2-6     for hard work that is inspiring to all who know her; now, therefore,
 2-7     be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     76th Legislature, hereby commend Cynthia Cooper on her selection
2-10     as an honoree by Texas College at its "Women Changing The World"
2-11     event; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
2-13     as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
