 1-5                           Cristina Cecilia Garcia
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Laredo in mourning the loss of Cristina "Cristy" Cecilia Garcia,
 1-8     who died February 20, 1999, at the age of 31; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born April 22, 1967, in Laredo, Cristy studied ballet
1-10     for 12 years and attended United High School, where she served
1-11     as captain of the Larriates drill team; in 1985, she was crowned
1-12     Laredo's Princess Pocahontas and began attending Saint Mary's
1-13     University in San Antonio; and
1-14           WHEREAS, During her college years, Cristina committed much
1-15     of her time to helping children with serious physical ailments
1-16     and was active in fundraising; she served during the summers as
1-17     a counselor for children with life-threatening illnesses at Camp
1-18     Recovery in the Texas Hill Country; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Following her graduation, Cristina commenced
1-20     what would become a highly successful career in Hispanic-oriented
1-21     marketing and advertising; in 1991, she moved from San Antonio to
1-22     Dallas to work at KUVN-TV, where she worked in all aspects of
1-23     television production and appeared in several Univision-produced
1-24     commercials; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, She subsequently moved to Los Angeles, and in
 2-2     1993, she accepted a position at the Walt Disney Company, where
 2-3     she oversaw Spanish and Portuguese language dubbing and subtitling
 2-4     for such films as The Lion King and The Hunchback of Notre
 2-5     Dame, as well as for the international release of Bambi; she
 2-6     supervised eight international film editors and music editors and
 2-7     worked with the distributors; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Cristy returned to Texas at the onset of her
 2-9     illness and became a team leader at ACTS Spiritual Retreats; and
2-10           WHEREAS, Remarkably courageous and inspirational, Cristy
2-11     was an exemplary young woman whose valor in the face of her illness
2-12     touched the lives of many; and
2-13           WHEREAS, In spite of her difficult battle, she consistently
2-14     manifested uncommon concern for others and was sensitive, generous,
2-15     caring, and befriending; and
2-16           WHEREAS, Highly talented, warmhearted, and intelligent,
2-17     Cristy was a source of strength and joy to those who knew her, and
2-18     she lived a life that was rich in friendships, love, and cherished
2-19     experiences; and
2-20           WHEREAS, Cristy was a devout Catholic and was a devoted
2-21     daughter, sister, and granddaughter, and she leaves behind memories
2-22     that will be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now,
2-23     therefore, be it
2-24           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-25     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-26     bereaved family of Cristina Cecilia Garcia:  her parents, Julio
 3-1     and Rosario Garcia; her sister, Mrs. Leticia Lourdes Garcia Mata;
 3-2     her brother, Julio A. Garcia, Jr.; her maternal grandmother,
 3-3     Mrs. Esperanza Flores De Flores; and her numerous aunts, uncles,
 3-4     and cousins; and, be it further
 3-5           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 3-6     the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
 3-7     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
 3-8     so in memory of Cristina Cecilia Garcia.
