 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 297
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-4     recognizing Charles Butt, chairman and chief executive officer of
 1-5     H-E-B Foods, who was recently named the 1999 Border Texan of the
 1-6     Year; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The Border Texan of the Year award pays tribute to an
 1-8     individual whose work has had a significant and positive impact on
 1-9     the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas; and
1-10           WHEREAS, A graduate of The Wharton School of Finance at the
1-11     University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Business School, Charles Butt
1-12     has been chairman and chief executive officer of H-E-B Foods since
1-13     1971; the company is comprised of 250 regional supermarkets and
1-14     45,000 employees, and its sales in 1998 amounted to $7 billion; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The company continues today to follow in the Butt
1-16     family tradition of emphasizing participation in community affairs
1-17     and humanitarian causes; the company has 1,400 schools under the
1-18     Adopt-A-School program, and its participation in the Food Bank
1-19     program has been larger than any other United States retailer; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Charles Butt is a member of the development board of
1-21     The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the
1-22     board of directors for the Food Marketing Institute, and the board
1-23     of overseers for The Wharton School of Finance; he was the founding
1-24     chairman and served on the advisory council for The University of
 2-1     Texas Marine Science Institute from 1976 to 1986; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Charles has devoted much of his time, energy, and
 2-3     funds to the preservation of our state's historical sites; he
 2-4     restored the Aransas Pass Light Station in 1971, the Carl Groos
 2-5     home in San Antonio in the early 1980s, and the United States
 2-6     Arsenal in San Antonio in the mid-1980s; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Accolades for Charles Butt's many contributions to
 2-8     communities throughout our state include the Amanda Cartwright
 2-9     Taylor Award from the San Antonio Conservation Society, the
2-10     Mr. South Texas Award in 1996 from Washington's Birthday Celebration
2-11     Association, the Freeman Award in 1996 from the Greater San Antonio
2-12     Chamber of Commerce, and the Corporate Social Responsibility Award
2-13     in 1998 from MALDEF; and
2-14           WHEREAS, Noted for his integrity, generosity, and many talents,
2-15     Charles Butt is an exemplary gentleman with an engaging personality
2-16     whose personal values and humanitarian endeavors have contributed
2-17     to the betterment of our state; now, therefore, be it
2-18           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-19     76th Legislature, hereby commend Charles Butt on his
2-20     philanthropic accomplishments and model civic leadership and
2-21     extend congratulations to him on earning the title of 1999
2-22     Border Texan of the Year; and, be it further
2-23           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
2-24     as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
