1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 307 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Dr. Hugh Sticksel, Jr. 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of Amarillo in mourning the loss of prominent optometrist 1-8 Dr. Hugh Sticksel, Jr., who died recently at the age of 58; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Born in Dallas, Hugh moved to Amarillo when he was 1-10 six months old; he was a 1958 graduate of Amarillo High School; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Dr. Sticksel earned his bachelor of science degree 1-12 in optometry from the University of Houston in 1962, and his doctor 1-13 of optometry from the same university in 1965; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Hugh Sticksel married Pan Purdy in 1964, and their 1-15 marriage was blessed with two children, Scott and Heidi; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Hugh began his optometric practice with 1-17 Dr. Hugh Sticksel, Sr., and continued until the death of his 1-18 father in 1969; Dr. Sticksel, Jr., then went into practice with 1-19 three other doctors; his daughter, Dr. Heidi Sticksel Hawkins, 1-20 joined him in his practice six months ago; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his profession, he was a Fellow of 1-22 the American Academy of Optometry; he was a member of the 1-23 American Optometric Association and the American Optometric 1-24 Foundation, and he was president of the Panhandle Optometric 2-1 Society; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Dr. Sticksel was named Optometrist of the Year 2-3 by the Texas Optometric Association in 1982; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Vitally interested in the welfare of his fellow 2-5 citizens, he was involved with the Boy Scouts of America at 2-6 both the troop and council levels, and he received the Silver 2-7 Beaver Award; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Noted for his spirit and enthusiasm for Tascosa 2-9 High School, Dr. Sticksel was given a Distinguished Service 2-10 Award from the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Dr. Sticksel was the recipient of the Distinguished 2-12 Service Award from the Texas Optometric Association, which his 2-13 father had previously received; in 1995, he received the University 2-14 of Houston College of Optometry Distinguished Alumnus Award; now, 2-15 therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 2-18 members of his family: his wife, Pan; his children, Scott 2-19 and Heidi; and his granddaughter; and, be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-21 the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy 2-22 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this 2-23 day, it do so in memory of Dr. Hugh Sticksel, Jr. 2-24 Bivins 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 President of the Senate 2-27 I hereby certify that the above 2-28 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-1 on March 1, 1999, by a rising vote. 3-2 ______________________________________ 3-3 Secretary of the Senate 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Member, Texas Senate
