1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 314
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-3     recognizing the citizens of DeSoto on the occasion of the city's
 1-4     50th anniversary of incorporation, which takes place March 3, 1999;
 1-5     and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The City of DeSoto began as one of the oldest
 1-7     settlements in North Texas; in 1847, 11 years after Texas won its
 1-8     independence from Mexico, families began settling in the area, and
 1-9     in 1848, T. J. Johnson built a tiny general merchandise store near
1-10     the "crossroads"; and
1-11           WHEREAS, A post office was established in 1881, and
1-12     the settlement was given the name of DeSoto in honor of
1-13     Dr. Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart, a beloved physician who
1-14     was dedicated to the community; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Following World War II, the settlement began to
1-16     grow, and the residents felt the need to incorporate to improve an
1-17     inadequate water distribution system; an election to incorporate
1-18     was held, and on March 3, 1949, the City of DeSoto was created; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The City of DeSoto became the 19th organized
1-20     municipality in Dallas County and has been served by 17 mayors
1-21     since its incorporation; and
1-22           WHEREAS, In celebration of the city's history and 50th
1-23     anniversary, a reception has been planned for March 16, 1999, in
1-24     which the city's founding citizens, longtime residents, and former
 2-1     elected officials will be honored; now, therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-3     76th Legislature, hereby congratulate the citizens of DeSoto on
 2-4     their city's 50th anniversary and extend best wishes to them for
 2-5     a joyous anniversary celebration; and, be it further
 2-6           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 2-7     the City of DeSoto as a memento of this special event.
