 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 327
 1-3           WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Senate are proud to
 1-4     join the citizens of Grimes County in the celebration of
 1-5     Grimes County Day at the State Capitol on March 4, 1999, and
 1-6     this festive event offers an ideal opportunity to recognize the
 1-7     county's many unique attributes; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Located in Southeast Texas, Grimes County is the
 1-9     former home of the Bidai Indians and was created from Montgomery
1-10     County by the 1st Texas Legislature in 1846; it was named in honor
1-11     of Jesse Grimes, who was a notable colonist, a signer of the
1-12     Texas Declaration of Independence, and a state senator from
1-13     Montgomery County; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Local property owner Henry Fanthorp donated the
1-15     land for Anderson, the county seat, and the town was named in
1-16     honor of Kenneth L. Anderson, the last vice president of the
1-17     Republic of Texas; home to the Fanthorp Inn State Historical
1-18     Park, which includes a historic log structure inn built in 1834,
1-19     Anderson is now recognized on the National Register of Historic
1-20     Places, as is downtown Navasota; and 
1-21           WHEREAS, The centerpiece of the Welsh-design courthouse
1-22     square is the Grimes County Courthouse, an Edwardian-Victorian
1-23     structure built in 1894 of hand-formed red bricks and rusticated
1-24     native stone with a central wooden cupola; a dramatic chapter
 2-1     in the building's history occurred during the 1930s with the
 2-2     trial of a Clyde Barrow gang member; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Grimes County's largest city, Navasota, was
 2-4     established by the Texas Legislature in 1866 and played a
 2-5     pivotal role in the economic success of the cotton plantations
 2-6     and farms along the Brazos and Navasota rivers; the city has
 2-7     functioned as the main railroad terminus and shipment center for
 2-8     a three-county area, and its attractions include the Horlock
 2-9     History Center and a statue honoring the French explorer La Salle,
2-10     who traveled the area in the late 17th century; and
2-11           WHEREAS, The Brazos and Navasota rivers enrich the
2-12     soil of the rolling hills in Grimes County, which also boasts
2-13     such recreational treasures as the Gibbons Creek Reservoir,
2-14     Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park, where the Texas Declaration
2-15     of Independence was signed, and Sam Houston National Forest, all
2-16     drawing cards for hunters, anglers, and other outdoor sports
2-17     enthusiasts; and
2-18           WHEREAS, The region's continued prosperity in recent
2-19     years has centered on agribusiness, manufacturing, and tourism;
2-20     among the annual festivals and events that delight visitors to
2-21     Grimes County are the Renaissance Festival in Plantersville,
2-22     Texian Days in Anderson, Navasota Blues Festival, Grimes County
2-23     Fair, Iola Hey Day, and Richards Founders Day; and
2-24           WHEREAS, The continued popularity of Grimes County as a
2-25     place to live, vacation, and explore Texas history is enhanced
2-26     by the county's friendly residents and by its rich historic,
 3-1     natural, and cultural resources, and it is a pleasure to
 3-2     salute this fine Texas county at this time; now, therefore,
 3-3     be it
 3-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-5     76th Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 1999, as
 3-6     Grimes County Day at the State Capitol and extend to those
 3-7     residents visiting on this day best wishes for a memorable
 3-8     trip to the Capital City; and, be it further
 3-9           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3-10     prepared for the Grimes County delegation as an expression
3-11     of high regard from the Texas Senate.
