1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 328
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the residents
 1-3     of Cooke County on the occasion of its Sesquicentennial Anniversary
 1-4     and the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the California Trail, both
 1-5     of which are being celebrated March 24, 1999; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, A county of rural charm and natural beauty,
 1-7     Cooke County is bounded on the north by the Red River and
 1-8     Lake Texoma and is a popular area for fishing, hunting, and
 1-9     vacationing; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Located in North Central Texas on the edge of the
1-11     Western Cross Timbers, Cooke County was carved from Fannin County
1-12     and was created by the Texas Legislature on March 20, 1848; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The county was named for William G. Cooke, a hero of
1-14     the Texas War of Independence, and many of the early settlers were
1-15     "Forty-niners" who stopped in the area while crossing the county
1-16     by way of the California Trail, which was blazed in 1849; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Oil was discovered in the county in the 1920s, and
1-18     cattle raising became an important source of revenue; by 1950, the
1-19     county was known as one of the most diversified grain counties in
1-20     the state, producing wheat, barley, oats, corn, and numerous truck
1-21     crops; and
1-22           WHEREAS, New development and population growth in the county
1-23     have been managed with care in order to preserve natural habitats
1-24     and historic sites; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The county is noted today for its historic homes,
 2-2     ethnic festivals, dairy farms, cattle and horse ranches, and scenic
 2-3     lakes; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, This area of Texas is treasured by citizens across
 2-5     the state and is a colorful region in which to live or visit,
 2-6     and Cooke County residents deserve recognition for preserving the
 2-7     county's rich heritage; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     76th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the people of
2-10     Cooke County for their many contributions to our state and extend
2-11     best wishes to them for a joyous Sesquicentennial Anniversary; and,
2-12     be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-14     the residents of Cooke County as a token of esteem from the
2-15     Texas Senate.
