 1-5                                Ima Mae Smith
 1-6           WHEREAS, The passing of former Texas First Lady Ima Mae Smith
 1-7     on August 29, 1998, at the age of 86, brought a great loss to the
 1-8     family and friends of this beloved woman; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born on October 20, 1911, in Jack County, she
1-10     graduated from Ralls High School and continued her pursuit of
1-11     academic excellence at Texas Tech University, where she met her
1-12     future husband, Preston Smith; and
1-13           WHEREAS, An elementary school teacher by profession,
1-14     she became a homemaker after her marriage to Preston Smith on
1-15     June 20, 1935, in Ralls, and they were blessed with two children,
1-16     Preston and Jan; through the years, Mrs. Smith welcomed four
1-17     grandchildren and one great-granddaughter into their close-knit
1-18     family; and
1-19           WHEREAS, This gracious lady was a member of the
1-20     House of Representatives Wives Club and later, the Senate Ladies
1-21     Club during her husband's tenure in the legislature, and her
1-22     responsibilities grew when her husband was elected lieutenant
1-23     governor; with his inauguration in 1968 as governor, she became
1-24     the state's first lady; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith fulfilled her duties with compassion
 2-2     and grace throughout her husband's two terms in office; as first
 2-3     lady, her concerns included improving conditions at the state's
 2-4     prisons and mental institutions, and her input was instrumental
 2-5     in helping reform conditions for the mentally ill and in the
 2-6     establishment of a state school in Lubbock; her special interest
 2-7     in the history of the Governor's Mansion and beautification of
 2-8     the building and grounds led to her publication of a comprehensive
 2-9     brochure about the mansion; and
2-10           WHEREAS, A proud supporter of her alma mater, Mrs. Smith
2-11     was the first woman to be named a distinguished alumna at
2-12     Texas Tech University, an honor also bestowed on her by
2-13     Ralls High School; and
2-14           WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was active in Lubbock civic
2-15     organizations after she and her husband returned to their home
2-16     from Austin; a charter member of Saint John's Methodist Church,
2-17     she also shared her time and energy with the Lubbock Women's Club,
2-18     Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, and the Methodist Hospital Auxiliary; and
2-19           WHEREAS, Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Smith devoted
2-20     herself to her family, friends, community, and state; those who
2-21     were privileged to share her friendship will long miss her
2-22     presence, and treasure her memory for many years to come; now,
2-23     therefore, be it
2-24           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-25     76th Texas Legislature, hereby honor the memory of Ima Mae Smith
2-26     and extend sincere condolences to the members of her family: 
 3-1     her husband, the Honorable Preston Smith; her children,
 3-2     Preston Michael Smith and Jan Smith Taylor; her grandchildren,
 3-3     Kelly Smith Jones, Preston Conrad Smith, Dr. Robert Preston Schmid,
 3-4     and Lauren Taylor; and her great-granddaughter,
 3-5     Katrina Elizabeth Jones; and, be it further
 3-6           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
 3-7     prepared for the members of her family as an expression of
 3-8     deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate
 3-9     adjourns this day, it do so in memory of former Texas First Lady
3-10     Ima Mae Smith.
