 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 348
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
 1-4     pride in honoring Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry on the auspicious
 1-5     occasion of his birthday on March 4, 1999; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, A native Texan whose family has been here for
 1-7     five generations, Governor Perry grew to adulthood on his family's
 1-8     farm in Paint Creek, Texas; an Eagle Scout, he has remained active
 1-9     in the Boy Scouts of America; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Rick Perry attended Texas A&M University, where he
1-11     joined the Corps of Cadets and was a yell leader; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Earning a degree in animal science, Governor Perry
1-13     graduated from Texas A&M University in 1972 and joined the
1-14     United States Air Force; and
1-15           WHEREAS, While proudly serving his country, Rick Perry
1-16     attained the rank of captain; after serving as a pilot of C-130
1-17     aircraft for four and one-half years, he returned home to join
1-18     his father in the family farming and ranching operation; and
1-19           WHEREAS, He married his childhood sweetheart, Anita Thigpen;
1-20     the happy couple formed a strong and loving partnership and began
1-21     a family; they are the proud parents of two children, Griffin and
1-22     Sydney; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Elected to the Texas House of Representatives
1-24     in 1984, Rick Perry served on the powerful House Calendars and
 2-1     Appropriations committees; his excellence as a legislator
 2-2     was recognized by The Dallas Morning News in 1989, when
 2-3     the newspaper named him one of the most effective legislators of
 2-4     the 71st Legislature; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Texans chose Rick Perry in 1990 as Commissioner of
 2-6     Agriculture, the first time in 40 years that an agri-businessman
 2-7     has been elected to that position of responsibility; he was
 2-8     reelected to that post in 1994 with a hefty 63 percent of the
 2-9     vote; and
2-10           WHEREAS, Elected Lieutenant Governor in 1998, Rick Perry
2-11     is the first Republican of this century to be selected for that
2-12     office; and
2-13           WHEREAS, Governor Perry and his family now live in
2-14     Austin, where their two children go to public schools, and
2-15     Governor and Mrs. Perry are members of Tarrytown Methodist
2-16     Church; now, therefore, be it
2-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-18     76th Legislature, hereby extend hearty congratulations to
2-19     Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry on his 49th birthday and wish
2-20     him great success in his future endeavors; and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-22     him as a memento of this grand occasion.
