1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 356 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Kara S. Hultgreen 1-6 WHEREAS, In connection with National Women's History 1-7 Month, which is being celebrated in March, 1999, and Women in the 1-8 Military and Texas Women Veteran's Day at the State Capitol, the 1-9 Senate of the State of Texas would like to pay tribute to the 1-10 life of the late United States Navy Lieutenant Kara S. Hultgreen, 1-11 who died on October 25, 1994, at the age of 29; and 1-12 WHEREAS, A graduate of Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, 1-13 Kara Hultgreen attended The University of Texas at Austin, earning 1-14 her degree in aerospace engineering in 1987; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Commissioned an officer in the United States Navy, 1-16 she started her pilot's training in an A-6 bomber, where she logged 1-17 more than 1,000 hours flying that aircraft and its counterpart, the 1-18 radar-jamming EA-6B; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Convinced of her own abilities, Lieutenant Hultgreen 1-20 aggressively pursued the right to train in combat aircraft while 1-21 flying the A-6 bomber; in May, 1993, she was assigned to F-14 1-22 training; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Soon after restrictions were lifted for flying 1-24 combat missions for females, Lieutenant Hultgreen became the first 2-1 United States Navy woman pilot to qualify in the F-14 after landing 2-2 at night successfully on the USS Constellation in July, 1993; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Logging 217 hours as the pilot of an F-14, she made 2-4 more than 50 night and day landings on aircraft carriers, completing 2-5 maneuvers which require delicate precision and are so hazardous that 2-6 even the most experienced pilots find the experiences frightening; 2-7 and 2-8 WHEREAS, This indomitable young woman's passion for flying 2-9 and her accomplishments have greatly impressed all who have heard 2-10 about her and her tragic death; Kara Hultgreen was a high-spirited 2-11 individual, and her courage, enthusiasm, affection, and intelligence 2-12 have made a legacy for all who knew her and shared her life; and 2-13 WHEREAS, Her presence is greatly missed and remembrance of 2-14 her will endure in the memories of all of her loved ones; now, 2-15 therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 76th Legislature, hereby honor the life and service of the late 2-18 United States Navy Lieutenant Kara S. Hultgreen, and remember her 2-19 especially during National Women's History Month and as part of 2-20 Texas Women Veteran's Day at the Capitol; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as 2-22 an expression of the deepest sympathy of the Texas Senate, and 2-23 that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-24 Kara S.
